August 19 GRE Issue 153 by Daisy153. "Students should bring a certain
skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught
instead of accepting it passively." From the beginning of education, a student
receives knowledge from his teachers. Then he takes examinations, in which what
his teachers said in classes is the correct answers to the questions. After a
long time, the concept that the teacher is always right is stereotyped in
students' mind. However, such a concept results in a lot of disadvantages for
students, no matter it is during his schoolhood or profession career.
Therefore, it is very important for students to grasp critical thinking and
bring a certain skepticism to what they are taught. Without skepticism, students would become
used to accept passively what teachers, books or other information sources tell
them, which needs little thinking about it. Yet effective learning can not be
achieved by merely remembering knowledge, but by thinking. A student who never
asks questions about his courses must be the one that never thinks about the
truth. It would result in more problems in their
profession career after the schoolhood is ended if students are not able to
think critically. The leading one is that it is not possible for them to make a
breakthrough whatever they do, for that any breakthrough is a result of
skepticism of the old pattern. For making new discoveries in science, if
the student becomes a scientist, nothing is more critical than skepticism. Only
when a question arise about a phenomena or an established idea does one begin
to think deep into it and seek for the explanation or solution, and ultimately
come up with a new idea. If he had firmly believed in the Classic Physics that
was established by Newton and was accepted widely as the crest of the study of
physics, Albert Einstein would not have originated the theory of relativity,
which is a milestone of the development of physics. In the business world, which is more likely
to be where the student is engaged, skepticism is also of great importance.
Michael Dell would not have made Dell Inc. a big success among the computer companies
if he had followed what his professor said to him. While a student at the
university of Texas, Michael Dell's paper in which he created a new business
model----"cutting out the middle man" and selling computers directly
to customers----was signed "C" by his professor, who thought that the
model was impossible at all. However, Dell didn't take his professor's opinion
as absolute truth and insisted in founding his own company in his model, which
turned out to be a big success. Yet too much skepticism should also be avoided. It is of no benefit if students question blindly what teachers say, which loses the function of education. What students should do is to bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study, rather than accept all passively or doubt everything. In the aspect of educators, their understanding of students' questions of what they teach is essential to create a good atmosphere for students to cultivate their critical thinking.
August 18 GRE Issue50 by Daisy TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach." WORDS: 417 TIME: 00:42:44 DATE: 2008/8/17 21:21:28 Today in many colleges and universities, some students work hard on their courses. However, when they step out of the university and into their career, they confront a lot of problems that they are not able to solve with what they have learned in the courses in the college or university. What is the cause of such a problem that troubles many graduates when they begin their career? It is that most faculty in colleges and universities always focus on their academic work while pay little attention to the professions relevant to the courses they teach. Generally speaking, almost all faculties in universities have research programs to do, which is usually the main part of their work. Dealing with academic work takes most of their time and energy. As a consequence, the courses they give to students are generally in relation to their own academic work, rather than the professions. However, only few students go into the academic world like their faculty while most go to do pragmatic jobs after graduation. What they need in their career is practical skills that help them solve the problems in their work. Many theories they learn in the university are too abstract to be used to deal with pragmatic problems. Facing such a situation, it will be beneficial to the quality of instruction at the college and university level if most faculties can spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach. When faculties know more about the professions, they will be able to give more practical instruction and skills to the students in their courses, which is of significant meaning to students in their careers. Yet it should also be pointed out that too much work outside in professions is harmful to the successful education in colleges or universities, for that too work in professions may affect the quality of the academic researches and the teaching work. Academic researches are always the important tasks of faculty in university in that only the faculties stand at the head of the development of sciences and lead science to go ahead continuously. To sum up, faculty in colleges and universities should spend part of their time working outside the academic world and learn more about the professions relevant to the courses they teach so as to provide instruction of higher quality and practical use to students. But faculty should always bear in mind their duty to accomplish academic goals that can not be achieved by others. August 15 GRE Issue 147 by DaisyTOPIC: ISSUE147 - "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them." WORDS: 371 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2008/8/15 15:50:29 Nowadays, with the fast modernization in the world, mangy people are worried that their tradition will be lost if they continue modernizing their society. Are tradition and modernization imcompatible? I don't think so. In my point view, it is possible to make a balance between tradition and modernization and the two can contribute to each other. Let's look at the Beijing Olympic Games Ceremony, which is a perfect combination of the elements of both tradition and modernization. For one thing, on this ceremony, numerous methods of modern technology are utilized to express the beauty of the traditional Chinese culture. The traditional Chines arts-----calligraphy, paintings, music and dance------are performed splendidly and amazingly with the help of modern technology. In addition, it is modern technology of transition of information that makes it possible for these Chinese traditions to be watched by many people all over the world. The conventions of modern technology like this can also been felt during the Spring Festical in China or Christmas in Western countries when families can gather together much eazier with modernizd transportation. For another thing, the spirits and beliefs showed on the ceremony, which are inherited from the Chinese ancestors, play a very important role in the modernaization of China. The core of the spirits and beliefs of Chinese people is "harmony", called "he" in Chinese, which is the Chinese character showed in one of the plays on the ceremony. The harmony------in a family, a working place, a school, a community and a country-----is always pursuited by Chinese for thousands of years. Today the modernized Beijing, China, showed to the whole world through the 29th Olympic Games, is the result of the harmonie development of China. In the future, we believe that harmony in every aspect of our country will help make it stronger and stronger. In sum, tradition and modernization are not incompatible. They can stay in harmony with each other to the extent that people have a proper attitude towards the relationship between the two. If we are able to take advantage of both tradition and modernization, our society is necessary to bloom. People can better enjoy tradition with many conventions brought by modernization. Traditon, especially traditional spirits, can also lends a hand to modernization. August 14 GRE Issue 103 by Daisy TOPIC: ISSUE103 - "The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives." What is the value of the study of history? I could not agree with the speaker that the study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives. In my point of view, the study of history has significant meanings to development of the present generation and the future ones, with numerous lessons that we learn from the history, only if we have the ability to analyze the history and discover what is valuable to the later generations. As the famous English philosopher, Francis Bacon, told us, "Histories make men wise." In the study of history, it is historical thinking, or historical reasoning skills that play the fundamental role, rather than history content such as names, dates and places. Historical thinking helps us analyze the past events, find what lessons those events tell us and learn how we can do better in the future. The value of the study of history can be illustrated by many examples. One of them is the process of the rebuilding of Japan after the World War II. Japan suffered tremendous damage during the World War II and after that it struggled under terrible situation, particularly the poor economic condition. Confronted such a corner, Japan's government conducted a plan that was almost impossible at that time but later saved the country from the damage they got in the war. The plan was to devote a large number of money to education, which cultivated a generation that later become the strongest power in rebuilding their country and developing it into a powerful one in a very short period. The booming development of Japan tells us about the tremendous importance of education to the development of a country. Another example happened on the land of China. Hundreds of years ago, during the later period of Qing Dynasty, the feudal government of China refused to communicate with the world out of China and knew nothing about the big changes that were happening on the other side of the earth. They even didn't know that many western countries had exceeded China. As a result, when foreign aggressors invaded the land of China, the Qing government almost had no capacity to defend itself and its country. Today, China's government has learned the lesson from the failure of Qing Dynasty and it is very active in participating in the worldwide communication with many other countries in various areas such as economics, academia and culture. This year the 29th Olympic Games are held in Beijing, China, which show the modern China to the world. To sum up, for the development of a society, the study of history has great value. So it is with an individual. Focusing on what is right here and right now is not likely to bring long-term improvement that needs insightful understanding of the nature and laws of the world. August 12 GRE Issue 185 by Daisy ISSUE185 - "Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could." In recent years, various scandals, in politics, academia, and other areas are exposed to the public. They often draw extensive attention of the public and thus have a big influence on both the persons directly involved in the scandals and the whole society. From a dialectic perspective, we should see both the positive and negative effect of scandals. To begin with, exposure of scandals helps to focus the attention of the public on problems, which is beneficial to the masses. Politicians, scholars, and enterprisers always try to cover up their wrongdoings, if they have, to maintain their own interests, but regardless of the sake of many victims of what they did. Therefore, only when the scandals are exposed can the public get to know the truth. What's more, it is usually only when the public pay attention to the issue that the victims are noticed by the society and that their rights and interests are protected. An example to illustrate this point is Japan's HIV-tainted blood scandal, which refers to an event in the 1980s when approximately 1800 Japanese patient with hemophilia contracted HIV via tainted blood products. For the sake of its own profits, the provider of these tainted blood products, Green Cross Cooperation, sold these untreated products to the patients, despite of the officially proclaimed heat-treating method of blood products to kill HIV. If this scandal had not been exposed to the public, the cooperation would have continued its sales of the untreated blood products, more patients would have fell a victim to it, and what's more, those infected patients would not have got compensation from the cooperation. On the other hand, scandals also exert negative effect. For one thing, to the society, scandals more or less agitate its members and even cause panics and crisis of credibility across the country. After Japan's HIV-tainted blood scandal, mentioned above, Japanese citizens suffered great panics and thousands of people went to take HIV test. What's worse, numerous Japanese patients who needed blood products for their therapy, refused to use them, even if they are provided with heat-treated ones. For anther thing, scandals often broke the fair evaluation of a person. In politics, for example, once a politician is reported to have political or sex scandals, his image will be damaged no matter what achievement he had accomplished, for that scandals better attract the attention of the public than achievement. In addition, scandals are not always based on the reality. They may be the product of false allegations. The innocent may suffer from vilification by a scandal falsely made up by their opponents, which often happens in the competition in politics and entertainment industry. Concerning such possibility, we should avoid believing blindly in the reports about scandals be careful in making a judgment on the issue. In sum, scandals focus effectively the public's attention on problems, which helps to solve the problems. However, scandals also exert some negative effect. Moreover, sometimes one is so vicious that he takes advantage of scandals by making up one to attack his opponents, which results in unfair competition. GRE Issue 130 by Daisy ISSUE130 - "How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society." I agree with the speaker that how children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Yet concerning the claim that we have not learned how to raise children who can help bring about better society, I don't agree with the speaker. In my point of view, even though there are some problems with the education we give to children, our children education does equip many children with the qualification to make the society better in the future. The destiny of society, to a great extent, is determined by how children are socialized today, as they will be the dominant power of the society. Socialization is referred to the process of learn to understand the society and how to live within it, which involves many aspects, such as moral norms, attitudes, values, motives, social roles, language and symbols. In the respect of the social roles, for example, it is essential for children to learn the skills of cooperation, which plays an important role in both the development of individuals and society. Psychological scientists have discovered that the influence a person receives in his childhood has the most significant effect on his or her whole life. Therefore, if the young generation learns well to get along with others and tolerate different ideas, the future society will enjoy higher efficiency and harmony. In contrast, if too much individualism is instilled into a generation from the beginning of their life, when they grow up into adults and become the mainstream of the society, egotism and selfishness will be very severe around. Aware of the significance of proper socialization of children, our society has been searching for the best way to prepare our children for making a better society in the future. Admittedly, the education given to our children, either from home or school, is not perfect at this moment. One of the problems is domestic violence, for instance. No matter it is acted directly on the child itself or on one of the parents (often the mother), domestic violence leaves a permanent hurt in the heart of the child, which is likely to be translated into hostility towards others, even violence. Another problem is that the present education system does not pay enough attention to some gifted children. However, many effective measures have been taken to improve the socialization of children. For example, in order to cultivate children's cooperation, mentioned above, both school and family haven laid more emphasis on community activities in which children interact with each other and develop their skills of cooperation. Though not perfect, our children are raised to be ones who can help bring about a better society. In sum, how children are socialized today plays a crucial role in the future development of society, which is consistent with the first sentence of the speaker's assertion. But I don't agree with the later part of the assertion. As I pointed above, now our society has devoted significant endeavor to cultivate children who can make great contribution to making a better society in the future, and many measures are proper and effective, even though we do confront some problems to solve. August 10 GRE Issue 36 by Daisy36 "The greatness of individuals can be decedied only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries." Which decide the greatness of individuals, those who live after them or their contemporaries? The speaker holds the opinion that the greatness of individuals can be decided by those who live after them. Admittedly, this assertion is true in some cases. However, in my point of view, it oversimplifies the issue. From a more comprehensive perspective, this question can only be answered with analyses case-by-case. When it comes to arts and literature, greatness lies in theie enduring influenc on the later generations. Elies Rogent, when he awarded Antoni Gaudi the title of architect in 1878, declared, "Who knows if we have given this diploma to a nut or to a genius. Time will tell." Antoni Gaudi developed a new style of architect, which was at first laughed by his peers. As time passed, though, his work became more famous, up to the point that he is now considered one of history's most original architects. His great works, including Park Guell, La Pedrera and many other famous ones, have been identified as the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Similarly, the greatness of William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was not widely recognized at his times. It was in the later generations that people discovered the significant value existing in his works and his works brought a tremendous influence to English language and literature. During these recent decades, his plays have been translated into every major living language, and are performed every of the world. Time will tell the real greatness of an artist. Concerning scientific research, especially theoretical research, greatness of a scientist must be tested over time before it can be confirmed. More than one hundred years ago, Charles Robert Darwin, established his theory of evolution in his book 1859 book On the Origin of Species. In his theory, evolution by common descent is the dominant scientific explanation of diversification in nature. Yet Darwin's evolution theory has been disputed for many years from the day he published it to the present day. Scientists found that some biological phenomena can not be explained by Darwin's evolution theory, and even seem contrary to his theory. It is still difficult to confirm whether the evolution theory built by Darwin is true or not, thus so it is to evaluate Charles Darwin objectively, despite that he did receive some praise, which was not absolutely sound. In contrast to what is discussed above, the greatness of some individuals can be decided by their contemporaries, particularly in pragmatic areas. The greatness of Bill Gates is so obvious that it is hard to deny it. Gates gained respect from the contemporaries of almost every countries with his philanthropism as well as his outstanding talent in computer science and business. As the CEO and chief software architect of Microsoft, Gates led the personal computer revolution, which has changed many people's ways of living and working all over the world and promoted the development of many industries. What's more, Gates is respectable for his great philanthropic endeavors, donating large amounts of money to various charitable organizations and scientific research programs through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, established in 2000. To sum up, whether the greatness of individuals can be decided by those who live after them or their contemporaries is determined by the attributes of what they do. As what is discussed above, in the areas of arts, literature, theoretical scientific research and other idealistic items, it is more likely that the greatness can only be decided by the later generations. In contrast, regarding those pragmatic areas, the individuals can be evaluated by their contemporaries. August 09 GRE Issue 48 by Daisy48 "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten." Throughout the history, there were many outstanding figures that represented the most significant events and trends and were remembered forever by people after them. The study of history often places emphasis on these individuals, for that they are regarded as the key role in making those significant events and trends possible. In my point of view, these excellent individuals did contribute a great deal to the development of human history. However, history was made by those larger groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten. Admittedly, many outstanding individuals did play a very important role in the history. Let's look back at the Renaissance (the period between the 14th and the 17th century), which was an influential cultural movement in pursuit of Humanism and brought a period of scientific rovolution and artistic transformation. It is easy for us to notice Giottio at the early Renaissace, an architect who was the forerunner of Renainssace and led the way of restoring dignity to human figures. What is more dazzling is the "Big Three Names" of the High Renaissace: Leonardo da Vinci was such a universal genuis that he was not only an artist famous for his masterly paintings, such as Mona Lisa and The Last Super, but also an successful anatomist and physiologist; Michelangelo Buoarroni,a sculptor, architect, painter, and poet, was well- known for his fresco ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, his sculptors of David, the Pieta and Moses and his design of the dome of St. Peter's Basilica; Raphel impressed many generations with the potrayal of Madonna and the painting of School of Athens. These giants made Renaissance an significant period throughtout the history of Western Culture. However, can we own Renaissance compeletly to Giotto, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo Buoarroni, Raphel and other giants of that ages? From a rational perspective, I conceive that the answer to this question is no. In fact, a groups of people who have been forgotten played a role no less important than those famous few. Fundamentally, Renainssace came from most people's strong desire for attention to human selves after a long period of oppression under the medieval Church's dispensation. It was people's increasing interests of human, shifted from God, that motivated Humanisim. Only when the demand for the freedom of mind to pursuit Humanism existed among the masses can those few pioneers find supporters to advocate them and promote their endeavor. Not only Renaissance, many other momentous events and trends all resulted from the influence of both the outstanding few and the masses. Therefore, it is unilateral to emphasis only on individuals, which fails to form the true and intact image of historical events. Too much emphasis on the famous individuals may augment individualism, which is not advantagous to improvement of the society as a whole. In sum, the study of history should balance the emphses on individuals and groups of people so as to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the significant events and trends throughout the history. Only by doing this can we learn more from the history and do better in the future. August 07 GRE Issue 144 by Daisy144 "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value." *a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc. " The speaker claims that it is the artist rather than the critic who gives society something of lasting value. I agree with the speaker with the value left by artists to us. However, the effect of the critic on art can not be ignored. Art is like a river flowing from the beginning of human civilization to the present day, bringing us innumerous treasures created by artists many years ago. The era of Shakespeare is far from today. However, William Shakespeare, one of the world's preeminent dramatists, is still revered by people with his significant influence on English language and Western literature. His great works, such a Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet and The Merchant of Venice, are not only studied by English-speaking people but also those who speak other language. His plays have been translated into every major living language, and are performed everywhere of the world. In the term of music, compositions of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) are widely acknowledged as pinnacles of classical music and many of them are part of the standard concert repertoire. When it comes to architecture, we still appreciate the fantastic works, such as Park Guell, La Pedrera and many others, made by the Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi almost one hundred years ago. What can be inherited from generation to generation, no matter how long has passed, are these splendid art works created by great artists, rather than critics. It is artists who infuse their works with their originality, passion and thinking, which are the most valuable. If artists are regarded as to play the key role in the development of art, then critics play an assistant role in it. It is not fair to ignore the influence that critics have on art. Critics help the public to make their choices among countless works of art. Every year many books are published and it is impossible and not necessary for ordinary people to read all of them. People can choose some of the books according to the comments made by critics as well as their own interests. Moreover, in some cases, it is critics that draw the public's attention to an artist and then make him or her famous. Yet critics also brought some negative effect on the development. Comments made critics are usually subjective, which inevitably leads to unjustness. In the history, some talented artists, especially those young artists who had not become well-known, were hampered by critics who made severe and negative comments on their works. One of such artists were Vincent van Gogh, who were not accepted by the contemporary critics and lived in a poor condition all his life, even though people discovered his talent and highly praised him after his death which proved the lasting value of his paintings. To sum up, no one can deny the truth that it is the artist who gives society something of lasting value. The critic does not create art itself. But they have an influence on the development of art, which should be thought over dialectically, for that they can both promote and debase an artist. August 06 GRE Issue 51 by Daisy51 "Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student." Education is an issue that people in almost every country have been discussing for many years. We are searching for a truly effective way of education, in respect that education plays a key role in the development of the society, which we learned from the fact that Japan got rid of depression and boomed depending on its education. I agree with the speaker that designing education to meet the individual needs and interests of each student is very important for achieving successful education. However, I conceive that more aspects should be taken into consideration. What is the goal of education? To individuals, it is through education that we get the understanding of the world and also ourselves; it is education that makes us mature; it is also education that lends us a hand to push us to our dreams. To the community, education cultivates persons with ability to improve it and ensure its perennial prosperity. Everyone is born with certain talent, yet it is likely to be neglected or not made full use of if the person doesn't receive a proper education. In a word, education functions to mine the talent from each person. When each individual can make full use of his talent to realize his dreams, it is certain that the community will advance. Interests often reflect the talent of a person. For instance,Jun-hui Ding, one of the top snooker plyers in the world, showed his great interest in snooker when he was only a small boy. Albert Einstain, from an very ealy age, enjoyed thinking about the physical world and at the age of 16, asked himself whether a light wave would seem stationary if one ran abreast of it, from which arise, ten years later, his theory of relativity. As interests are the signs of the talent of a person, effective education can't be achieved if it can't meet the individual needs and interests of each student. But before they take measures to meet the needs and interests of each student, educators should first find out what students need and have interests in. Therefore, during primary education, teachers should lead children to contact various kinds of knowledge, and more important, in a interesting way. Only by doing so can children discover their individual interest for a certain item, such as music, painting, literary, math or physics. After the student's interest, which implies his talent, is clear, he should be given the education that is designed for his interest. That is what high education should do. Chung-Laung Liu, the former president of National Tsing Hua University once compared excellent high education to a vacuum flask, which can keep hot water hot and cold water cold. He said that high education should provide a good environment for students to learn what they are interested in and pursue their own dreams, rather than bondage the students with uniform curriculum and administration. The university is supposed to provide as much education resources as possible to students, such as professors, labs and libraries, and allow them to choose any of them when they need it. From what has been discussed above, we may draw the conclusion that education should play a role of inspiring the individual interests of each student, which should be done in the early period of education. In the later period, education should be designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student. Only by this can education be truly effective. August 04 GRE Issue 85 by Daisy85 "Government funding of the arts threatens the integrity of the arts."
From the old times to the present days, arts are often funded by the government or the dominators. Does government funding of the arts threaten the integrity of the arts? To my knowledge, arts do need funding but it is not good for arts if government functions as its only source of funding.
Art is an activity that needs a lot of funding. For that work of art is not an ordinary commodity, artists are not able to make profits as manufacturers. Many artists are troubled in poverty before they become famous because few people buy the works made by an artist who are not well-known. The severe poverty often forces the artist to give up his dream for arts and to do other work to make a living, or to paint in a style that appeal to most ordinary people and to sold the painting as a decoration as a piece of colored wallpaper, which is rather ironic.
In the history, many dominators provided funds for artists. In ancient China, the emperor usually hired a group of artists in his palace and these artists painted for the royalty. In the times when the technology of photograph had not been invented, aulic artists played an important roll as to record the life of the royalty with their brushes. Most Chinese paintings reserved from the ancient time are the portraits of those royalty members and the description of their life. There were also a lot of artists doing other kinds of arts for the royalty, such as sculpting stones and making porcelains. Similarly, in the ancient western countries, artists were often employed by the church, which dominated the power of the society at that time. Today we can see many beautiful pieces of fresco in the church, which were painted by those artists of the church many years ago. For example, the famous Sistine Chapel ceiling was conceived by Pope Julius II and he ordered Michelangelo to paint it.
Admittedly, the arts funded by the dominators, mentioned above, do have significant value of art. However, artists who are supported by the government get from the government not only economic funds but also political pressure. They have to make their works appeal to the government and then they lose their free mind, which is the most important factor in a splendid work of art. In other words, they sacrifice their innovation to get the funding from the government. In the aforementioned example, Michelangelo was reluctant to accept the task ordered by the Pope, but the Pope was very adamant, leaving Michelangelo no choice but to accept. It was very likely that Michelangelo was not happy when he was creating the fresco and thus his talent could not be exerted absolutely. What is worse, sometimes government takes the advantage of art for its political purposes. The government may use art to build a positive image of itself which is not the truth so as to mislead the public and solidify its domination.
To sum up, funds for the development of the
arts should not be exclusively by government. More various sources of funds,
including organizations, cooperations and individuals, are of much more benefits
to the flourish of the arts.
GRE Issue 121 by Daisy ISSUE121 - "At various times in the geological past, many species have become extinct as a result of natural, rather than human, processes. Thus, there is no justification for society to make extraordinary efforts, especially at a great cost in money and jobs, to save endangered species." Long long ago, before human beings appears, or human were a small species hiding in the forest, some species disappeared forever from the earth, one after one. Admittedly, that resulted from natural, rather than human, processes. However, can we conclude from that that there is no justification to make extraordinary efforts to save en dangered species? Obviousely, the answer to this question is no. Researchers discoveried that only one species of birds became extinct every 300 years on average in the geological past and one species of animals every 800 years. Yet the rate of extinction erupts in recent years, as every year a species become extinct. We have to admit that the eruption of extinction is due to what we human beings have done to the environment. After the Industrial Revolution, human stepped into an age of industry. Forests are conquered by human beings to make room for factories. Moreover, because of the pollutants poured out by factories, water and air are polluted and those areas where many creatures live are not available for living any more. Additionally, along with the development of medicine, people's longevity has increased to a much higher level than ancient times and thus population have mounted up greatly. As a result of all the factors mentioned above, human beings extend thier living areas to those that once belonged to other species. Deprived of homes and unable to settle new homes, many species die out. Meanwhile, once a species die out, another spicies that is fed on it is likely to die out as well. Human beings's long existence on the earch is threatend if more and more species become extinct rapidly. In this beautiful world, all the creatures are connected to each other on a tremendous net. Each species functions as a node on the net and food chains between species are the lines which link them together. Only when the net is intact and every node acts normally and properly can the world flourish. We human beings are only a node of the worldwide net, just as any other species. If other species all die out and the net break up entirely, human will be inescaplly extinct. So it is significant for people all over the world to make efforts to save endangered species, to ensure our bright and long-term future. Yet it should also be pointed out that we need to keep a balance between protecting other species and improving the people's own lives rather than denote everything to save other species,as immoderacy is dangerous, even if it is out of good motivation. An example can help illustrate this idea: society should make a proper layout to utilize a piece of land as fully as possible if we do need the land. It doesn't mean that we should not use more land. What should be avoided is to carve out an area but not to make full use of it. From the analyses made above,I strongly suggest that socity should take a series of effective measures to save endangered species to keep the diversity of creatures. We can't live healthily without a healthy ecosphere. We have made many mistakes that do harm to the environment and damage other species. It is time for us to take the reponsibility and make it up. |
